What Is ProFractional®?

A fractional erbium laser that treats scars and deep lines by treating only a fraction of your skin at a time.

ProFractional® works differently from the other treatments in our resurfacing family. Where NanoLaserPeel®, MicroLaserPeel® and Contour TRL™ treat the entire surface of an area at a chosen depth, ProFractional® creates a pattern of narrow, deep channels through the skin, leaving the tissue between those channels completely untouched.

That untouched tissue is the key to how this treatment works. It acts as a network of bridges that speeds healing, which means ProFractional® can reach a depth appropriate for real scar correction — acne scars, surgical scars, C-section scars, deep static wrinkles — while asking for meaningfully less recovery than a full-field treatment at a comparable depth. Each channel triggers a genuine wound-healing response that rebuilds collagen from the inside, which is why results continue improving for months after the visible healing is done.

What to Expect During a ProFractional® Treatment

ProFractional® is performed at our Melville office by one of our physician assistants.

A topical anesthetic is applied before treatment, and for deeper settings around especially sensitive areas, a local nerve block may also be used. Most patients feel minimal to no discomfort during the treatment itself. Sciton® cites 30 to 45 minutes of treatment time. After treatment, you may continue to feel warm for an additional 30 to 60 minutes, especially with deeper settings.

What Is Recovery Like After ProFractional®?

Keep the treated area moisturized with a non-fragranced product for the first three days. Around 24 hours after treatment, skin may feel slightly swollen or itchy — this typically resolves within three to five days as the skin darkens and begins to flake.

You can apply makeup after 24 hours, and most patients resume normal social activities within a few days. Total recovery typically runs 7 to 10 days, with continued improvement over the following months as new collagen forms. Daily sunscreen is essential for at least four weeks after treatment.

Results from a single treatment typically last six to twelve months. Most patients begin with a series of three to five treatments, then return every twelve to eighteen months for maintenance.

Who Is a Good Candidate for ProFractional®?

ProFractional® is the treatment we reach for when scarring or deep static lines are the primary concern — acne scarring, surgical or C-section scars, and deep vertical lines around the mouth or eyes that injectables and lighter lasers haven't fully addressed. It's built for patients who want real structural correction but who want to fit recovery into 7 to 10 days rather than planning a longer, vacation-length downtime.

It's a good next step for patients who've tried MicroLaserPeel® and want more correction, and a common companion to BBL® HEROic™ or HALO® TRIBRID™ for patients addressing multiple concerns.

A few things are worth discussing at consultation: active acne breakouts in the treatment area should be resolved first, a history of keloid scarring needs extra caution, and recent isotretinoin use should be flagged to your provider. If your main concern is significant sun damage or the deepest lip lines, Contour TRL™ may be the better fit.

Is ProFractional® better than a CO2 laser?

They work on different principles. ProFractional® uses erbium technology, which generally produces less residual thermal injury to surrounding tissue than older CO2 lasers, which is why redness typically resolves faster with ProFractional®. Which is 'better' really depends on the depth of correction needed — your provider can walk through the tradeoffs for your specific scarring or wrinkles.

How many ProFractional® treatments do I need for acne scars?

Most patients begin with a series of three to five treatments, spaced to allow full healing between sessions, followed by maintenance visits roughly every twelve to eighteen months.

Does ProFractional® hurt?
