What Is Contour TRL™?

Our most powerful resurfacing setting — full-field erbium correction for the deepest lines and scars.

Contour TRL™ is the deepest setting on our tunable erbium resurfacing platform — the same technology behind NanoLaserPeel® and MicroLaserPeel®, taken to its maximum intensity. TRL stands for Tunable Resurfacing Laser, and the tunability matters here specifically: your provider can dial in the exact depth in microns to match the correction you need.

Unlike ProFractional®, which treats the skin in a fractional pattern, Contour TRL™ is a full-field treatment — the entire surface of the treated area is resurfaced. That's what allows it to address the most stubborn concerns on our menu: deep vertical lines around the mouth (often called smoker's lines), significant sun damage, and deep acne scarring that lighter treatments haven't fully resolved. It's also why Contour TRL™ asks for a longer recovery than anything else in our resurfacing family — a tradeoff worth understanding clearly before you book.

What to Expect During a Contour TRL™ Treatment

Contour TRL™ is performed at our Melville office by one of our physician assistants.

For shallower settings, a topical numbing cream is generally sufficient. For deeper treatments, local anesthesia is used to keep you comfortable. A computer-guided scanner moves the laser across the treatment area to ensure even coverage. Sciton® cites 45 to 60 minutes of treatment time depending on the size of the area and the depth chosen. You'll feel warmth and, for deeper settings, some pressure — your provider will check in with you throughout.

What Is Recovery Like After Contour TRL™?

This is the most important section on this page, so let's be direct about it: Contour TRL™ asks for real recovery time, and how much depends heavily on the depth your provider sets.

Days 1 to 3: skin is red, swollen and feels similar to a sunburn. Peeling and flaking begin within the first 24 hours and continue over the following days — do not pick, rub or force any skin to come off, as this can lead to scarring or infection.

Days 4 to 8ish: redness continues to fade as new skin emerges underneath. Depending on depth, visible redness can persist 8 to 12 days.

About one week: most patients can begin wearing makeup once the skin has fully healed and any occlusive barrier products are no longer needed.

Beyond one week: how long residual pinkness and sensitivity last depends almost entirely on depth, from a couple of weeks after a lighter treatment to several months after the deepest settings, and your provider will tell you which end of that range to plan for before you book. Avoid direct sun exposure for a full two months after treatment, and use daily sunscreen consistently for up to three months — this is what protects against hyperpigmentation while your skin is still sensitive.

The visible healing is only part of the timeline. Deeper collagen remodeling continues for three to six months, and that's when your final result fully emerges.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Contour TRL™?

Contour TRL™ is best suited to patients with deep, static wrinkles — especially vertical lip lines — significant sun damage, or deep acne or surgical scarring, who want the most dramatic non-surgical correction available and who can genuinely plan for the recovery involved. That might mean a real vacation, a quiet stretch at work, or simply blocking off the calendar rather than fitting it around a busy week.

Most patients who choose Contour TRL™ have already tried lighter options — NanoLaserPeel®, MicroLaserPeel® or ProFractional® — and are looking for more correction than those provided. It's not usually the first laser treatment we recommend to someone new to resurfacing.

Contour TRL™ is also frequently performed alongside facelift surgery. Deep resurfacing around the mouth and eyes is often combined with a facelift, treating skin texture while the surgery addresses the underlying structural changes.

A candid conversation at consultation matters here: a history of keloid scarring needs extra caution, recent isotretinoin use should be disclosed, and you should feel fully comfortable with the recovery timeline above before committing.
