What Is BBL® HEROic™ Light Therapy?
The next generation of BroadBand Light, plus infrared energy for skin firming.
BBL® HEROic™ is Sciton®'s newest BroadBand Light (BBL®) platform — an advanced form of light therapy that treats the two things most responsible for a tired, uneven complexion: brown pigment and red vascularity.
Light energy passes harmlessly through the surface of the skin and is absorbed by its target. In sun spots and age spots, that target is excess melanin. In rosacea and broken capillaries, it is the hemoglobin inside small blood vessels. Once absorbed, the energy breaks that pigment or vessel down so your body can clear it, leaving skin that reads as more uniform and more rested.
The same platform also delivers infrared energy, which heats collagen deeper in the skin to improve firmness. That is why BBL® HEROic™ at North Shore Cosmetic Surgery is not one treatment but a family of them — Forever Young BBL® for the face, Forever Body BBL® for large areas like the chest, arms and legs, and SkinTyte® for laxity. Your provider selects the filter, the energy and the protocol that matches your skin.

BBL® HEROic™ improves on earlier IPL and BBL® devices in three ways that patients actually feel.
• Speed. HEROic™ stands for High Energy Rapid Output. Large areas that used to take an hour — the chest, the back, both arms — can now be treated in minutes.
• Comfort. A chilled sapphire crystal sits against the skin throughout the session, cooling the surface while the light works beneath it. Most patients need no numbing at all.
• Even coverage. The handpiece tracks its own speed across your skin and adjusts as it moves, which helps avoid the patchiness and striping that older devices could leave behind.
Sciton® reports that patients typically see visible improvement in one to two BBL® HEROic™ sessions, where older IPL technology often required five or six. And because there is little to no downtime, most people return to work, the gym or a dinner out the same day.

What to Expect During a BBL® HEROic™ Treatment
BBL® HEROic™ treatments at our Melville office are performed by our physician assistants, who treat with these devices every day.
We start by cleansing the area and giving you protective eyewear. A thin layer of cool gel goes on next, and your provider glides the handpiece across the skin in overlapping passes. Most patients describe each pulse as a quick flash of warmth — noticeable, but brief. Numbing cream is not usually necessary.
A facial session generally runs 15 to 30 minutes. Body areas often take less; the arms or legs can be finished in a few minutes each. Expect to be in the office for roughly an hour including check-in and post-treatment care.
Afterward your skin will feel warm, similar to a mild sunburn, and that warmth typically fades over the next 30 to 60 minutes. We will apply sunscreen before you leave and send you home with written aftercare instructions.
What Is Recovery Like After BBL® HEROic™?
There is little to no true downtime after BBL® HEROic™. Most patients go straight back to work or their normal routine, and makeup can usually be applied the same day.
What you will notice is the pigment itself changing. Over the first 24 to 48 hours, treated sun spots and freckles darken — often described as looking like fine coffee grounds sitting on the skin. This is expected and is the clearest sign the treatment reached its target. Over the following three to seven days, that darkened pigment lifts and flakes away on its own as you cleanse.
Areas treated for redness may look slightly flushed for several hours to a day. Mild swelling is possible, particularly around the eyes, and settles quickly.
Full results generally develop over about two to three weeks. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is not optional afterward — new sun exposure is what brings the pigment back.

Forever Body BBL® applies the same technology to everything below the jawline. The high-speed output makes it practical to clear decades of sun exposure from the chest, shoulders, arms, hands, back and legs in a single short appointment — areas that were historically slow and uncomfortable to treat.
SkinTyte®
SkinTyte® uses infrared rather than BroadBand Light. Instead of targeting color, it heats collagen deep in the skin to improve firmness and elasticity on the jawline, neck, abdomen, arms and above the knees. Most patients compare it to a warm stone massage.
Forever Clear BBL®
Forever Clear BBL® takes the same platform in a different direction entirely, using a blue-yellow-infrared light sequence to treat active acne, calm related redness, and soften early scarring — with no downtime and no medication involved.
Who Is a Good Candidate for BBL® HEROic™?
BBL® HEROic™ suits people who are bothered by the color of their skin more than the texture of it — sun spots, age spots, freckling, diffuse facial redness, rosacea, broken capillaries, or a chest and shoulders that show years of Long Island summers.
It is also a strong choice for patients who want meaningful improvement without stepping away from work or social plans, and for those in their 30s and 40s who want to stay ahead of visible aging rather than correct it later.
A few things affect timing and candidacy. BBL® targets pigment, so it is safest when your skin is at its natural tone; we ask patients to avoid deliberate tanning and self-tanner for two to three weeks beforehand. Deeper skin tones can often be treated but require adjusted settings and careful evaluation. Active infection in the area, recent isotretinoin use, photosensitizing medications and pregnancy are all worth raising at your consultation.
If pigment is not your main concern, we may recommend MOXI® for melasma and texture, HALO® TRIBRID™ for a comprehensive reset, or laser resurfacing for scarring and deep lines.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does BBL® HEROic™ hurt?
Most patients tolerate it easily. Each pulse feels like a quick flash of heat, and the chilled sapphire tip cools the skin continuously during treatment. Older IPL devices were often compared to a rubber band snap; BBL® HEROic™ is noticeably more comfortable, and numbing cream is rarely needed.
How many BBL® treatments will I need?
It depends on how much correction you are after. For significant sun damage or rosacea we typically plan a corrective series of about three sessions spaced roughly four weeks apart. Many patients then come in once or twice a year for maintenance. Sciton® reports visible improvement in as few as one to two treatments.
Is BBL® the same thing as IPL?
BBL® is a form of intense pulsed light, so the underlying principle is the same — but the devices are not equivalent. BBL® HEROic™ delivers higher energy, cools more effectively and controls pulse delivery more precisely than the generic IPL machines many practices still use, which is why fewer sessions are usually needed.
Can I have BBL® in the summer, or if I have a tan?
Because BBL® works by targeting pigment, an active tan changes the equation and raises the risk of an uneven result. We ask patients to avoid sun exposure, tanning beds and self-tanner for two to three weeks before treatment. If you are tan and do not want to wait, MOXI® is a year-round alternative we can often perform instead.
Can BBL® be done on the body, not just the face?
Yes, and this is one of the biggest advantages of the HEROic™ platform. Forever Body BBL® treats the chest, shoulders, arms, hands, back and legs quickly enough to make full-area treatment practical.
Can BBL® HEROic™ be combined with other treatments?
Frequently. Pairing BBL® with MOXI® addresses color and texture together; pairing it with HALO® TRIBRID™ adds deeper resurfacing in the same visit. Your provider will tell you which combinations make sense for your skin and how to sequence them.
