Case Details

This patient underwent bilateral mastectomies and immediate (Direct to Implant) reconstruction using silicone gel implants and Alloderm. After she was diagnosed with breast cancer she came to our office to talk about reconstruction. Although she had cancer only on one breast, she decided to have both breasts removed in order to avoid any chance of developing cancer of the other breast. Fortunately, her breast surgeon felt she was a good candidate for nipple-sparing mastectomies. Traditionally, In most breast cancer mastectomies the nipple and areola are completely removed. One consequence is that after the fullness of the breast has been reconstruction, another surgery is needed to reconstruct the nipple and areola. This patient was able to have the nipple preserved, and her surgery was done completely through an incision around the areola. She was a good candidate for breast reconstruction at the time of mastectomy using silicone gel implants and Alloderm (a human-derived skin product that enables immediate implant placement). Her post-op photographs are taken 8 weeks after surgery. No one would suspect that she had undergone bilateral mastectomy just 2 months ago.
